Warzone

Tensions have increased dramatically in Bangkok over the past few days. A leading Redshirt commander was shot in the head by a sniper, the Thai army surrounded the Redshirt stronghold, and several people have been killed. Gunfire could be heard around Lumphini Night Bazaar Friday night and a bus was blown up. Expectation for an escalation in violence were high Saturday morning as I headed to the protest site yet again. The subway and sky-rail have been closed until further notice and the only way close to the main area is by motor-taxi. The Redshirt camp has been relatively calm over the past month with several small escalations, but today everything was different. The fight was setup along Rama IV between the end of Lumphini Park and the Queen’s Convention Center. The Redshirts set fire to tires and were launching grenades at the Thai Army’s encampment throughout the afternoon. The Thai Army didn’t open fire while I was standing next to them and seemed confused about who was shooting at the crowd. Grenades exploded and snipers took shots into the crowd that lined the street. Rama IV Road was a site of madness and chaos that I hope these pictures do some justice to – anarchy on a sunny May Saturday.

@Laurent tell me should this make any difference to the typical Issan Farmer living in slavery without money?

It’s to kick the ammart and royals out of there position. The ones who enslaved there country for years and are now fought.

Its an uprise of the poor peasants.

What will happen if the red shirt enter (hijack)the World Trade Center and surrounding shopping Mall? What are people able to do if they run out of food…….?
Why killing 8 year old childtren. I got he impression that the army only contre attack in self defense, why do snipers kill people from a 5th floor building from behind baaricades?

    What a shame??

These pawns fighting Thaksin Shinawatra’s money war.

If your plight was so sincere…… the road map would have passed with ease.

Seh Daeng said it best….. if we give up now, Thaksin can’t come home!

    Thaksin Shinawatra = THE DEVIL!

Very good photos indeed but in all fairness they are missing a keypoint. You write they were launching tires with fire and grenades at the Thai Army’s encampment throughout the afternoon…yet not even a single photo show anyone throwing a grenade?
