Travel Blog of the Week: Sole Sisters

As you know Riding Out The Economy was started by two friends in search of adventure and it always excites me to come across blogs with similar beginnings. Sole Sisters is run by Lois and Chichi. A tag-team pair traveling the world when they can and relaying their stories and tips through their well-written and sometimes humorous blog. As always what stuck out to me first was Lois’s fabulous photography, and she was kind enough to take some time this week to answer a few questions for us.

Tell me about yourself and this project you’ve started.

I’m Lois and I started Sole Sisters with good friend and colleague Chichi who is equally passionate about travel. After many conversations and daydreams, we finally got to work and created a site where we can document our travels, inspire others to seek adventure and commune with other like-minded individuals.

What motivates you to keep doing this?

The need to travel and share the joys of travel with others. The thought that we’re encouraging others to get out of their comfort zones and challenge themselves to see where their itchy soles can take them.

What got you into photography?

I remember getting a Nikon film SLR camera from a favorite uncle. I still didn’t know how to work the manual controls then. But I took it everywhere. Now I own Gabe, a Nikon DSLR camera and we’ve been inseparable since.

Film or digital? Dream camera set-up?

Digital for instant gratification. But I would love to own a sexy Hasselblad 500 CM and 60 mm Hasselblad lens to go with it.

Where is the one place you want to go and who would you go with?

Why just one place when the world is gynormous? India has always held a special place in my heart ever since I’ve read God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy. It would be great to have gastronomic adventures and enlightened experiences with Sole Sister Chichi and Hutch and get to cross off item number 25 on our list.

What advice would you give to a new photographer?

Forget about the rules and go with your gut. Take photos that evoke emotion.

What is the best place you’ve traveled so far?

This is a tough one. Going up the Grosser Mythen in Switzerland comes to mind. Novel experience, Literally breathtaking view, Fabulous company. I wrote all about it here.

What is the worst thing that has happened to you on the road?

Nothing horrendous but I did get sick while I was in Coron, Palawan in the Philippines. There’s nothing worse than getting sick while you’re in paradise.

Steven Seagal, Chuck Norris. Sean Connery, Jean Claude Van Damme, or Bruce Willis?

Sean Connery. I’ve always gone for the older man.

What are your plans for the not so distant future?

Something HUGE is about to happen on Sole Sisters in the next few months. We’re keeping mum for the meanwhile. But the clues are that it involves travel, curry and water- lots of it!

I’ve only met one-half of the sole sisters and that was Chichi. I hope to meet Lois some time soon. These girls really have a light and fun blog. Often times I read their content and I just always leave smiling.

First time here. Nice Blog Tony! Very spacious and minimalistic!

I had the privilege of meeting the two sole sisters, but it wasn’t on the road, rather in a Christmas party of fellow travelers. How I wish I’d join them in one of their travels soon. Such colorful characters and kindred souls.
